A view into the Kraffer Garden

About the garden

The Kraffer Garden is a public, demonstration natural garden—a green island in the heart of the city. It’s the perfect answer to what to visit in Jindřichův Hradec. You can join in on events and workshops, visit the florist, the garden center, or the café. You can “just” come to relax and watch the gardeners at work. You can help co-create this place where gardening craft intertwines with culture and people’s stories, and find your own inspiration here.

Our story

In 2021, we decided to take charge of this exceptional place and lease it from the town of Jindřichův Hradec. Perhaps out of fear of what might happen to it, given it was designated as a parking lot in the urban plan. Perhaps we were moved by the local genius loci and the chance to step into a story worth telling. Our main motivation is to save the garden—permanently, with respect and love for a place that truly deserves it.

The garden's story

Every garden has a story. Ours began nearly 300 years ago when Countess Marie Isabella Czernin had it established. Since then, the garden has seen ups and downs, from a prosperous First Republic gardening business to abandonment and devastation. Learn about the most important milestones and dive into selected moments from the garden’s story with us.

In the media

The story of the Kraffer Garden has captured the interest of both Czech and international media. Reports about our garden have appeared on TV, radio, and in gardening magazines. We are glad that journalists are helping to spread the word about what to visit in Jindřichův Hradec and that the Kraffer Garden has become an inspiration for other projects. Here is a selection of articles, interviews, and reports about a garden that has come back to life.

Our partners

Saving the Kraffer Garden is a non-profit project that could not exist without the support of partners, patrons, and donors. We thank all the companies and individuals who believe in preserving this landmark in Jindřichův Hradec for future generations. This support allows us to continue the restoration, helps keep the garden open to the public, enables cultural events, and supports the development of the demonstration natural garden.
